A Letter from the Daughters of Penelope
-News and Information
The Daughters of Penelope here at Holy Trinity, is an affiliate of the
AHEPA, which stands for the American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association. Our Chapter has been active in Bridgeport, and well respected in the AHEPA Family circles for many years. It was founded in 1929 by Alexandra
Apostolides, and is the first national women's organization of its kind in the United States.
The Daughters of Penelope and the AHEPA have both joined nationally to assist in the fight against Cooley's Anemia, a crusade which was founded in our community. Other causes the Daughters of Penelope supports are "Penelope House", the shelter for abused families in Alabama – it was the first of its kind in that state! Just this year a second such facility, "Penelope's Place", was opened in Brockton, Massachusetts. As much as we wished these shelters were not needed, we are proud to support the formation of two such places where women and their families can seek shelter from abusive situations.
The organization also promotes awareness and funds research on medical diseases such as cancer, Alzheimer’s disease, and muscular dystrophy. The DOP provides financial support for many research and charitable organizations, including the Papanicolaou Cancer Center, the American Heart Association, UNICEF and many others.
In addition, the Daughters of Penelope support St. Basil Academy, a home for children from compromised families, where they are raised in an Orthodox environment. And as many of you know, the Daughters give out many, many scholarships to worthy students from across the country each year.
In addition to the above charitable concerns, our DOP chapter supports our own church’s ministry, and each year offers scholarships to graduating high school seniors in our parish.
Please consider joining our chapter in its mission to promote the ideals of Hellenism; namely Philanthropy, Education, Civic Responsibility, Good Citizenship, Family and Individual Excellence though community service and volunteerism.
Our meetings are the third Wednesday of each month. We need everyone to get involved, even if you can only attend from time to time. You can make a difference! Please join us!
