Historical

of the Church

| In speaking of the historical development of the Church, we mean here the genesis and evolution of the Greek-speaking Church, which is the mother not only of all Orthodox Churches but of all Christendom as well. The Greek Orthodox Church comprises today five administrative jurisdictions, that is, the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the Patriarchates of Alexandria and Jerusalem, and the Churches of Cyprus and Greece. Altogether the Church counts a membership of approximately 12 million people living in Greece, the Near East, Africa, North and South America, Western Europe, and Australia.
