NOVEMBER 30
- FEAST DAY OF
- ST. ANDREW
|
St. Andrew was the first Apostle called to serve Christ. He became one of the greatest missionaries in all history. Andrew was destined to preach in Asia Minor now known as Constantinople and eventually came to Patras, Greece, where he was proclaimed Bishop of Patras. He suffered martyrdom because he converted the wife of the pagan ruler. For this, he was crucified on an X shaped Cross upside down. Despite his crucifixion, he continued to preach to the faithful and for Christ. After three days of agony, St. Andrew gave up his life for Christ.
After the fall of Constantinople - 500 years ago, the Sultan of Turkey gave the head of St. Andrew to the Roman Pope. It was returned to Partas in 1964 by the Pope of Rome as a token of respect to the Greek Orthodox Church. |
