MARCH 25

FEAST DAY OF THE ANNUNCIATION OF THE THEOTOKOS

On March 25th, Archangel Gabriel was sent by God to the Blessed Virgin Mary to announce that she would give Birth to the Christ Child, Who would save the world.

Naturally, she was alarmed at first and asked many questions. "Do not be afraid, the Lord is with you because God has chosen you among all the women in the world and in history' said the Angel Gabriel. She was comforted and let the Holy Spirit come within her and her life.

Greek Orthodox Christians especially remember the 25th of March because their forefathers used this holly day for a second event. For 400 years the Orthodox Christians of Asia Minor and the Baikans suffered and were oppressed by the Ottoman Empire. In 1821 a group of Greek Orthodox Christians in Greece decided to free themselves and consequently the Greek War of Independence is also celebrated on the same day. (Names celebrated on this day are: Evangelia, Evangelos, Angelo and Angeliki)*
