MAY 21
- FEAST DAY OF
- STS. CONSTANTINE & HELEN
|
Constantine became Emperor of the Roman Empire and gave religious freedom to all Christians who had suffered hardships at the hands of previous Roman Emperors. He built the new Capital of the Empire and named it Constantinople. It was here that, over 1000 years of Byzantine Civilization began. This period became known as the "GOLDEN AGE" of Christianity.
St. Helen, his mother, became a Christian at a very early age. It was her desire to visit the Holy Land. She visited the Holy City where she searched and found the "true Cross of Christ"
It was St. Helen who built some of the most famous shrines such as the Church of the Holy Sepuicher (over the tomb of Christ), Church of the Ascension (on Mt. Olive), Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, (where Jesus was born), a Monastery and tower for the monks at Mt Sinai, the Church of the Holy Cross (where she found the True Cross).
